F15. Tabloid

A British drug company registered the trademark Tabloid in 1884. The name was derived from the word

‘tablet’ the various concentrated types of drugs marketed by the firm.

By the end of the 19h Century, the word tabloid came to denote anything small and in a compressed form.

Now its usage in Journalism has superseded its use in its original meaning.
