The first Pekingese in Europe were the five dogs brought from China.

The British got them from the women’s apartment in Pekingese Summer Palace,

during the Boxer rebellion in 1898-1900.

Before that this breed as the monopoly of the Chinese royal family.

A theft of this royal dog resulted in the penalty of death.
