“The best laid scheme of mice and men.”

The full version appears in the 1785 poem “To a mouse” by Robert Burns.

“The best laid schemes o’ mice an’ men
Gang aft a-gley;
An’ lea’e us nought but grief and pain,
For promis’d joy.”

“Gang aft a-gley” means “often go awry”.
