F57. Hoodlum

This word denotes a dangerous criminal. It was coined in 1870 by a San Francisco news paper reporter.

He wanted to coin a new word to denote the young ruffians. He selected the name of a local gang leader

Muldoon and reversed it to form Noodlum. The type setter thought it was Hoodlum.
