A loanword (or loan word) is a word borrowed from a donor language and incorporated into a recipient language. By contrast, a loan translation or a ‘calque’ is a related concept where the meaning or the idiom is borrowed rather than lexical item itself.

A lexical item may be a single word, a part of a word, or a chain of words that forms the basic elements of a language’s vocabulary. Lexical items generally convey a single meaning, but are not limited to single words.

The terms borrow and loanword conflict with the ordinary meaning of those words because nothing is returned to the donor languages by the recipient language.

Several foreign phrases are being used in everyday conversation and writing in English. Majority of them are of Latin origin. There are many French and Italian words also to add to the glamor and make the writing appear sophisticated. It will be beneficial for us to revise them as they are valuable tools in the hands of a writer.
